We are the coolest and probably the queerest pastors you will ever meet, and we stand by this claim. Being part of Sunshine Cathedral, which is the world's largest progressive queer church, we believe that Church or faith or religion has a significant impact on our mental makeup and its health. Surveys in the LGBTQ+ community are almost unanimous. Church and religious faith have been the historic heart of creating LGBTQ+ hate, anxiety and therefore challenges to mental health. Religious belief and participation in a faith community play a positive role in supporting mental health for many individuals. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, religion can have a positive impact on mental health by providing people with something to believe in, a sense of structure, and a group of people to connect with. But where is that for queer people? At Sunshine Cathedral and even the Queer God Squad, we are trying to offer people across the world a sense of belonging and security by telling them that they are not alone. But, we must understand that mental health is complex, and individual experiences vary. Hence, we encourage anyone struggling with mental health to seek a holistic approach, including professional help from mental health professionals, therapists, or counselors. Faith and religion, in conjunction with other resources, will promote overall well-being. If you or your loved ones are in need of help, visit sunshinecathedral.org/care to get it.
