Justice Served: Unveiling the Names of Brianna Ghey’s Teenage Killers

The perpetrators responsible for the murder of trans schoolgirl Brianna Ghey, identified as Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, both 16, have been publicly named as they receive life sentences for their heinous crime. Mrs Justice Yip revealed their identities after lifting the anonymity order, given the severity of their actions. Throughout the trial, the duo had been referred to as Girl X and Boy Y, with their disturbing shared interest in violence, torture, and serial killers highlighted during court proceedings. Their joint planning of “dark fantasies” was a chilling aspect discussed by the jury. At the time of Brianna's tragic murder on February 11 last year, Jenkinson and Ratcliffe, both 15 then, had compiled a “kill list” that included four other teenagers. During the sentencing at Manchester Crown Court, Brianna's father, Peter Spooner, expressed his devastation, describing Jenkinson and Ratcliffe as “pure evil.” In his victim impact statement, he remarked, “Now...

My Mental Health Is Struggling. Can Faith And Church Really Help Me?

We are the coolest and probably the queerest pastors you will ever meet, and we stand by this claim. Being part of Sunshine Cathedral , which is the world's largest progressive queer church, we believe that Church or faith or religion has a significant impact on our mental makeup and its health. Surveys in the LGBTQ+ community are almost unanimous. Church and religious faith have been the historic heart of creating LGBTQ+ hate, anxiety and therefore challenges to mental health. Religious belief and participation in a faith community play a positive role in supporting mental health for many individuals. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, religion can have a positive impact on mental health by providing people with something to believe in, a sense of structure, and a group of people to connect with. But where is that for queer people? At Sunshine Cathedral and even the Queer God Squad , we are trying to offer people across the world a sense of belonging and securit...

Federal Judge Says DeSantis Spread Misinformation To Get Anti Trans Restrictions

A federal judge who heard a lawsuit challenging Florida 's restrictions on gender-affirming care says Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis repeatedly spread false information to push through policies that would limit access to various transition-related treatments. U.S. Judge Robert Hinkle, of the Northern District of Florida, made the remarks during the final day of a trial, finding that Florida health authorities and DeSantis initially cast the state's law barring minors from accessing gender-affirming treatments as a necessary step to prevent children from being mutilated. But, Hinkle said, the law actually prevents transgender individuals from accessing any health care treatments that affirm their gender identity. The restrictions on gender-affirming care were first enacted in March after the Florida Board of Medicine and Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine approved rules to limit the accessibility of hormonal and surgical interventions. DeSantis subsequently signed a bill in May...

Good Riddance To 2023, Here’s What We Ain’t Bringing To 2024

One of QNT Today's favorite “splainers” of Queer Pop Culture, Bernardo Sim, a writer and editor at Out Magazine had some observations on how we “won't” start the new year. Bernardo has a list of things that we are committing to absolutely not bringing into 2024. This immaculate list includes George Santos, we need a break, finished, done. The list also includes Elon Musk's X/Twitter. Full stop. Drop Mic. Also, No more witnessing LGBTQ+ shows getting canceled after just one season like Rise of the Pink Ladies, A League of Their Own, First Kill, and Warrior Nun. What else we do not want to see in 2024 is muscle gays doing photoshoots in Calvin Klein underwear, praising and/or bashing my brothers and sisters of Gen Z, no relying on TikTok to be our official queer news source, Tik Tok is a dumb person's CNN. Stop the combo of white high-top Converse and calf socks, stripped Zara button-down shirts, complaining about ‘Drag Race' fatigue, not supporting drag kings, trying...

Broward House Looks To New Leadership In The New Year

Broward House has a sacred mission of helping people with chronic health problems, including HIV. Leading that effort is not easy, demands long hours, and will be thankless most of the time. It seems daunting, but Nicole Burrell finds it inspiring. She is the new CEO at Broward House and is ready for the challenges that lie ahead. She said, “Community service is my passion and being at Broward House allows me to mesh both my finance and service skills,” she said. Her goals include raising their community profile and address not only HIV, but housing insecurity, homelessness, prevention and care. Burrell takes over for Stacy Hyde, who is retiring after 21 years. She has her work cut out for her. In addition to the issues I just mentioned, she comes into an organization that is still reeling from April’s flood. Broward House’s building was devastated. Water damage was so severe, the walls were taken down to studs and much of the building’s infrastructure was updated. The costs will take ...

Let’s Look At The Top LGBTQ+ Stories Of 2023

Queer News Tonight has always shed light on the important happenings in the life of the LGBTQ+ community across the world. This year we have brought you more than 2000 television stories. Our struggles are common and our happiness is connected. Hence, we thought of revisiting the best moments of this year, while we are about to say goodbye to 2023. The most underrated gem of the year has to be Veronica Esposito's foray into AI-faked yearbook photos, allowing her to imagine the girlhood she'd always longed for. The most terrifying news of the year has to be the U.S.-based ‘hate group' Alliance Defending Freedom using a shadowy network of lawyers and doctors to infiltrate Canada. The best video on TikTok this year was of Queer Eye fame Jonathan Van Ness having a frank conversation with Dax Shepard about dispelling anti-trans misinformation, and they called out Shepard for participating in it. The best use of the rainbow metaphor has to be Jeremy Dutcher describing his unders...

Can Queer Theology Embrace And Celebrate Earthy, Bodily And Even Erotic Imagery Of Christianity?

The Greek and Roman gods had a robust sexual nature that often drove their stories and actions. Their beauty and physical prowess were a big part of their myth. But, the focus was on redemption, sacrifice, and surrender. Naked muscle men and milky-skinned youths as subjects of art were fine as long as they were in support of religious, mythological, or allegorical works. Honor, strength in battle, and sacrifice were all noble subjects that were used to justify presenting some pretty hot stuff. Additionally, there is a vast collection of stunning examples of nearly ‘not-safe-for-work’ biblical images and erotic Christian moments. It includes Saint Sebastian, Guido Reni, c.1615, All laid out: Saint Sebastian by Nicolas Regnier, 17th century, and The Flagellation of Christ, by Bacchiacca, c. 1512. But we must know that this depiction of the naked male body started to change in the last couple of centuries. Especially the more radically conservative faith of the 20th century. The Church be...

Is Church Watching ‘a Renaissance Of Gay Literature’ Marking A Turning Point For Publishing?

Florida banned more books in 2023 than any other state. And more than 95% of library removal is over LGBTQ+ themes pushed by evangelical Christian organizations. But 2024 starts with some hope of a sort of renaissance of gay literature. Queer 25 year old author Jenny Fran Davis book the unapologetically titled “Dykette” became one of the most buzzworthy titles of 2023. Davis told NBC News “This book really came along at a time where we’re in this renaissance of gay literature. There was an immediate audience that wanted to accept it with open arms. There was a receptiveness that I don’t know would have been there five years before, Just the title alone would have been scarier for publishers even five or 10 years ago.” According to industry experts this queer renaissance started in 2019. 2023 sales of LGBTQ+ books is 7% year over year and 200% since 2019. Compare that with all fiction books of down 3% year over year and 22% over the last four years. Kristen McLean, a leading book indust...

New Study: Two Out Of Three Lgbtq+ People Raised In Church Have Lost Their Faith In Religion

At Queer God Squad we know Christianity is a complicated topic among LGBTQ+ people, but there are still groups in the community that embrace their faith — sometimes to the detriment of their health, and sometimes to their benefit. A new study from Utah State University and the Williams Institute at UCLA provide some shocking statistics on Queer and Religious Faith. The headline is that nearly two-thirds of LGBTQ+ people who were raised Christian no longer identify with religion. Even more disturbing is among those who remain, adults report more internalized homophobia and transphobia. The study found that those that continue to identify as Christian the highest as adults are older, black, cisgender men. More live in the South than any other region in America. Also disturbing was the fact that those who stayed Christian were significantly higher in reporting having a history of conversion therapy of some sort versus those who left or were never part of the religion. Those who were nev...

Guess Which Country Supports Marriage Equality The Most

New Pew Research Center analysis shows that Western European countries are most heavily in favor of marriage equality. Pew has conducted surveys in 32 countries in the past two years. Support was highest in Sweden, where 92 percent of respondents favored equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. Other countries in Western Europe were not far behind, with 89 percent support in the Netherlands, 87 percent in Spain, 82 percent in France, and 80 percent in Germany. Each of those countries has legalized same-sex marriage . In Italy, where legalization is being debated but hasn't yet happened, 73 percent of respondents endorsed marriage equality. In the United Kingdom, support stood at 74 percent, and all parts of the U.K. have enacted marriage equality. The situation was much different in the Eastern European countries Pew has surveyed, with just 41 percent support in Poland and 31 percent in Hungary. In North America, 79 percent of Canadians and 63 percent of both U.S. residents and ...

Congratulations, You’re Not Crazy As 50 Years Ago APA Drops ‘Homosexuality’ As A Mental Disorder

Fifty years ago this week, the American Psychiatric Association dropped “ homosexuality ” from its list of mental disorders. The historic event was lauded as a key advancement for the cause of LGBTQ+ equality. Before December 1973, the APA had classified homosexuality as a mental illness. But in 1964, gay men and lesbians began to openly protest that stigmatizing label. Barbara Gittings and Kay Lahusen were lesbian activists who emphatically opposed the label. They lived together in Philadelphia and managed to convince another Philadelphian, gay psychiatrist, Dr. John E. Fryer, to address an APA annual convention in May 1972 in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Fryer addressed the assembled psychiatrists wearing a mask and with his voice distorted. But he delivered a moving plea for the APA's removal of the stigmatizing mental illness label. Nineteen months later, on Dec. 15, 1973, the APA's board of trustees agreed to stop classifying homosexuality as a mental illness. The decision was uphel...
